Chapter Ten

Lily

“Wait, I can hear...sense...feel something...someone.” That was a garbled mess, but she didn’t know how better to describe it. It was a combination of sensing and feeling and just knowing others were near. “I’m sure it’s Skye.” She rushed to the wall and began pointing to it. “Is there a barrier there?”

“No,” said Samson.

“I don’t see anything,” said Calista.

A second later, they all heard knocking come from the other side of the wall. A rush of relief flooded through her at the sound. Skye was on the other side of the wall, and they could finally be reunited. She couldn’t explain the sensation that had brought her to the wall, but it was clear her powers were growing stronger.

“Is someone there?” called Skye. Her voice was faint through the wall, but Lily heard it.

So did a few others, and Stanton started knocking on the wall too. “We’re here. Who’s with you?”

“It’s me...Skye. Ishanti and Hilda, Jaden, Tomaso, and River Monroe.”

Calista stepped forward, pressing her mouth close to the wall to shout. “Is there a break in the barrier on your side?”

“Tomaso and Ishanti say yes. I don’t see anything, but my vision is still...blobby.”

Lily didn’t take time to ask what she meant. “How are we going to get through to them before the barrier shifts again?”

“We could try breaking through on our side,” said Mathew.

Emilia nodded, already scanning the room for something to use. “I’ll find something to break through the wall. Maybe that old trophy cabinet over there?”

As Emilia pulled it closer with her mind, Lily focused on the wall, trying to sense any weak spots. She sensed a vulnerability and pointed it out to Samson and Calista. “Is that clear?”

“Yes,” said Calista, though she looked at her nephew, nodding just after he did.

“We can use that spot if the barrier doesn’t fluctuate,” said Samson, his eyes focused on the wall.

Emilia returned with the cabinet and positioned it in front of the weak spot. With a telekinetic blast, she sent the cabinet hurling toward the wall, and it crashed through, sending the trophies flying in every direction.

Lily barely had time to take in the mess before Skye and the others emerged from the other side of the wall. The three friends ran to each other, hugging tightly while the others tried to process the situation.

She was temporarily diverted by Emilia standing over the trophies. She was staring particularly hard at the cheerleaders’ trophies. Suddenly, they began to implode, crumpling in on each other as though squeezed by an invisible vise. Emilia’s chilling laugh accompanied it, sending a shiver down Lily’s spine.

Skye distracted her from that concern with another, far greater one. “We have to go. There are demons here. I saw them on our side, and I can feel their presence.”

Johanna scoffed. “That was probably just your imagination. You used to have a really fat brain, so you probably have extra imagination or something.” She looked annoyed that her insult hadn’t developed better.

River frowned at Johanna. “I believe her.
